2024 Round 7 Donington Park Preview: Sweet Home, Donington?

Quite how we got to Round 7 of the season already is beyond me, and well myself and the car are surviving by a thread after last time out! Thankfully we have had 6 weeks to fully recover and fix the wreckage from Cadwell and try and put our best foot forward for my home weekend in the BRSCC Mazda Mx-5 Supercup at Donington Park.

Over the past year, I seem to have spent most of my weekends at Donington, whether it be driving, helping around the paddock for friends running their cars, or just going for a bit of a watch of some racing. But every time I go there, I seem to come back with very soggy feet.

Once last years rebuild was complete, the first thing we did was shake the car down at Donington, and then we completed 3 more test days getting on top of the Kumho tyre in damp conditions only for a wet tyre to be introduced. So after doing a lot of laps to prepare, all of them have been completely meaningless laps, effectively meaning we still go into a bit of the unknown and off the back of more struggles with this diva of an Mx-5.

Back when the car was brand new at a very damp Donington winter test.

Once we managed to fix the car and Pez worked his miracles as he's become accustomed to over the past couple of years, we set about trying to understand why we have been struggling so much in the dry, with both Oulton and Cadwell being really bad weekends in terms of performance for us in particular. On the face of it there hasn't been anything obvious, but we have made a lot of drastic changes to try and get the car back to how it was feeling at Silverstone at the start of the year, as that is genuinely the last time I felt happy with the car. At this point of the season, and especially now with 4 DNF's to my name, I really do have nothing to lose.

Going into my home race weekend with nothing to lose and potentially my last round of the season does fill me with a lot of excitement though, and I am hoping to see guests from all my sponsors including title sponsor Airbourne Graphics & Signs with it being their local track as well! But for those unable to make it we are back to our usual format of Qualifying and Race 1 on Saturday, followed by Race 2 and 3 on Sunday at the times below, with all the races live on the BRSCC Youtube channel and TSL via the links below.

Can't wait for the gloves to come off and get stuck in, see you on the other side.

Jack
