An Anniversary Weekend at Anglesey

Updated: Jun 4, 2019

The next race weekend is upon us, and it promises to be a special occasion for many reasons!

This weekend the BRSCC will be celebrating 30 years of the Mx-5, and what a great 30 years it's been...

To mark the occasion, all 3 Mx-5 series will be together for the 1st time at Anglesey, with the Supercup coming to join in with the Super Series and of course the mk1 championship which I am competing in.

Anglesey is also the 1st track of the year that I have previously visited in an Mx-5, as in 2016 the circuit hosted the 2nd round of the BRSCC Mazda Mx-5 Championship, with me competing in 4 races throughout the weekend (more than doubled my total race tally in one weekend!)

A blast from the past, in the old car back in my 3rd ever race weekend!

Fortunately a lot has changed since the 2016 season, with the car looking a little more refined and clean underneath for one, however, hopefully I will enjoy strong results similar to my last visit!

From a personal side, I find Anglesey to be one of the most exciting circuits in the UK, and the views on a bright sunny day are incredible, so everyone will be fingers crossed for a very dry weekend in the north of Wales.

As for this season, round 4 was always going to be the biggest change of the season, with everyone now forced to run on the trickier Avon tyres, I can go into the weekend feeling cautiously optimistic having been quickest of the Avon runners throughout the start of the season.

Circuit map of Anglesey

The circuit itself looks very basic on the track map, however, with the massive undulations and cambers around the track, it becomes one of the most technical and challenging on the calendar, with plenty of corners that create tight racing and opportunities for errors.

With Anglesey set for some major changes over the next few months, with massive investment coming into the circuit, hopefully the 3 grids full of Mazda's can provide a weekend of good, clean racing as a send off before the renovation starts...
